Paddle Guide
What Oneshot paddle to choose?
Whether you just discovered pickleball or you are an advanced player we have the right paddle for you. We have divided this guide in 2 ways 1) General considerations and 2) Specific paddle guidance so you can make an informed decision when selecting the right paddle.
GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS
Selecting your grip size:
- Height test
This informal test gives you an overall idea on how to go about selecting the right grip size.

- Palm test
Hold your dominant palm up. Notice your palm has three major creases. Take a ruler and measure from the middle crease of your palm, up to the tip of your ring finger. This measurement should reflect the perfect grip size for you. If you are unsure between two sizes, choose the smaller size.
Selecting your weight:
- Beginner players
Players first learning the game of pickleball should start with a light paddle (7.5-7.8oz) featuring a larger head size. This will help them make contact with the ball consistently while learning to rally without wearing out their arm as their muscles get used to the game.
- Intermediate players
Intermediate players can start to reduce their head size and add a little more weight (7.6-8.2oz) to their paddles as their muscles develop and they learn to generate more pace on their own. Doing these two things will allow them to keep their new-found power under control.
- Advanced players
Advanced players should be using mid-heavyweight (>8.0oz) paddles that allow them to play with control, feel and precision. These three benefits will provide a more connected-to-the-ball feel, allowing players to play more confidently as they go for their shots.
Selecting your paddle material:
Fiberglass paddles often weigh a little more that graphite paddles. Because they are a little heavier than graphite paddles, fiberglass paddles are considered to have more power. Graphite paddles are considered to have more control or finesse. Both graphite and fiberglass paddles are lightweight and strong. There is a general perception that graphite is better but no one has studied if there is a difference in how the ball comes off a graphite vs. fiberglass paddle.
Now that we have taken care of that, let’s look at our paddles.
